Frequently Asked Questions

Mental Illness Has No Boundaries
Shea’s Chase was founded in loving memory of Shea McKenna, who died by suicide on June 8, 2014. On that day we lost a dear friend, a loved one, a brother, and a son.
The next year, Shea’s Chase was established as a movement to break the stigma surrounding mental illness, to get people to think of their mental health the same way as their physical health, to communicate hope and to increase the availability of services and support for those in our community who are struggling.
Updated from Shea’s Family
Time has marched on and ten years passed since a tragic merge of circumstances led Shea to place himself in harm’s way. We have learned that time does not blunt the pain of loss but has included the new experiences and sustenance of strong love which has allowed survival and continued joy in life….
Benefitting Mental Health Services since 2015
Tom & Dianne McKenna, founders of Shea’s Chase 5K Run/Walk
In 2023, the Kellin Foundation took the helm of Shea's Chase 5K Run/Walk, continuing the esteemed work and legacy initiated by Tom and Dianne McKenna back in 2015.
Since its inception, Shea’s Chase has dedicated all proceeds to supporting mental health services. Initially benefiting Mental Health Greensboro, Greensboro’s longest-running mental health non-profit established in 1940, the event raised over $400,000 from 2015 to 2021, directly aiding its free mental health programs.
In 2022, Mental Health Greensboro merged their peer support programs with the Kellin Foundation. Now, Shea’s Chase proceeds directly contribute to the Kellin Foundation's free counseling, peer support, and wraparound services that serve over 12,000 children, adults and families annually in Guilford County and beyond
